Obituary for Manuel De La Rosa

Manuel De La Rosa
Manuel De La Rosa, long time band director at Mineola and Grand Saline Schools, passed away on May 27th. He was 89 years old. Funeral visitation will be held at Beaty Funeral Home, 5320 S. State Hwy 37, Mineola, on Tuesday, May 29th from 6:30-8:30. Catholic rosary will be recited from 7:00 to 7:20. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wed, May 30, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church, 203 Meadowbrook St, Mineola, TX with interment immediately following at Roselawn Cemetery.

Manuel was born in the small South Texas town of San Diego (Duval County) on Dec 4th, 1928. He had a love of music since childhood. After graduating from high school in 1947, he joined the U.S. Army Air Corps (soon to be designated the U.S. Air Force) as an Air Force bandsman. After his tour of service ended in 1950, Manuel used the G.I. Bill to earn his BA and MA in Music Education at North Texas State University. He entered teaching in 1954, first as a band director at Groveton, TX, and shortly thereafter to Grand Saline, his home for many years from 1955 to 1971. There he met the love of his life, Mavis Curnutt, and they married on June 1, 1957. In 1971, the family moved a short distance to Mineola and Manuel took over the music program for both junior high and high school until his retirement in 1986. He was a popular teacher with the students, and the band program flourished under his leadership and care. Many students from these small schools chose careers in music as band/choral directors, music professors, and performers as a result of his influence and inspiration. After retirement, “Mr D” perfected his amateur chef skills and catered numerous meals for community groups, the high school drama team, and his church. He was very active with the Knights of Columbus and was also a volunteer for Mother Frances Hospital for many years.

Manuel is survived by his wife of over 60 years, Mavis De La Rosa, longtime Principal of Mineola Primary School; one brother, Erasmo De La Rosa of Orange Grove TX; two sons, Michael De La Rosa of Round Rock, his wife Laura and two sons Christopher and Andrew; and Mitch De La Rosa of Waco, his wife Liz and five children, Anna Marie (Christianson), Julia, Cecilia, Manuel, and Benny.
